Found this interesting set of videos about distributed computing using the hadoop project by Apache and a distributed filesystem. Its the sort of technology google use and is the technology that facebook use (plus many others). It allows you to run jobs over many hundred computers and process terabyes of data. There is also a database-esk layer that sits on top of this which allows you to do things like joins on really large datasets just like in sql.

I've always wondered what all this rdf stuff is about. People who know about tend to rave about it. I recently watched a video presentation from Tim Berners-Lee (the guy who invented the net) about linked data, as was still unsure what he was talking about by the time he finished. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/tim_berners_lee_on_the_next_web.html

I then watched a video about rdf in Drupal, which explains via example the power of rdf. I can now see the power of rdf. I won't try to explain it. Check the video.

Today I upgraded my website from Drupal 5.6 to 6.4. It did not go as smoothly as I had hoped. Mind you reading the instructions may have helped a bit :-) My old theme has not been upgrade to D6 so I choose another one. I think it prettier anyway!

A friend of mine from High school days has started up a company called Data Lock, a home (and business) computer backup service. What makes this special is that 100% of the profits go to a village in Cambodia through World Vision.

Recently the Presbyterian church of New Zealand had their biannual general assembly. Their keynote speaker was a Rev Randall Prior. He spoke on "Reformed and Reforming" http://www.presbyterian.org.nz/4955.0.html. The MP3's of his presentations are available for download. We have recently had a couple of sermons on the topic "Is the Church Dieing?". The consensus was that no the church is not dieing, but the form of church is. Era's: * Apostolic period: <4th Century "Go into the world, baptise all nations" * Christendom period: started with the conversion of Constantine.
